A very important story that needs to be told and heard. Some scenes were hard to watch, but I was riveted because the story is so well told and the acting was charismatic. The characters are delineated with each one being entirely realistic. I highly recommend this movie to all.

"Shepherd: The Story of a Jewish Dog" is a family adventure drama with the historical backdrop of WWII. The film follows the journey of Caleb, a German Shepherd who is taken from his family due to a Nazi ban on pets. He is then trained by the SS to attack Jewish prisoners. Eventually, Caleb is reunited with his former owner, Joshua, who is now a prisoner in the same camp. Together with other desperate prisoners, they plan a daring escape mission. The film avoids excessive sentimentality and downplays the horrific imagery and gut-wrenching emotions usually seen in Holocaust-era films. It keeps the tension and terror within the PG range, making it very accessible for younger viewers to watch with older family members who will also find it compelling. The film manages to strike the right tone, delivering an honest but palatable history lesson about the Holocaust. The cute puppies serve as a lure for younger viewers, while the dog's sharp abilities make it a compelling addition to the cast. The film is nicely shot and rendered on a seemingly modest budget, with Hungary substituting for Germany. "Shepherd: The Story of a Jewish Dog", directed and written by Lynn Roth, is emotionally engaging and worth watching. It offers a unique perspective on the Holocaust and highlights the bravery and resilience of those affected by it. The film's message is poignant, reminding us of the power of compassion, even in the darkest of times.

"Shepherd" speaks to the heart and humanity of all. This important and educational journey told from the perspective of a boy and his dog is inventive and inspiring. An unexplored story from the Holocaust that will give children and adults an opportunity to address a hard and continuously relevant subject.

A beautifully shot film that enables us to try to make sense and humanize a time of terror through a boy's relationship with his dog. I was impressed by director Lynn Roth's ability to build on this emotional connection while delivering a strong powerful message.

This is an exceptional movie requiring a mental and emotional commitment to a time when history was demonstrating man's inhumanity to man and when life and death were as fragile as snowflakes falling on a warm winter's day. Written, Produced and Directed by Lynn Roth; a woman with a long history of sharing the struggles and lives of many in the Jewish Community by providing introductions to history that are too often forgotten or misrepresented. This writers first recollections of her work may be as Executive Producer of the 1978 TV production of The Paper Chase starring James Stephens as Student James Hart and award-winning actor John Houseman as Professor Kingsfield. Her latest efforts are to share what would become the first paragraphs of what would evolve into the fate of the Jewish community in 1930s Germany. Her main character is a German Shepherd dog whose birth on screen to a loving German family will lead to both his, and his Jewish family's chronicled travails from one of loving togetherness, too the beginnings of violent anti-Semitism in Hitler's Germany, to the concentration camps which would become the destination for our German Shepherd dog (Kaleb by name and meaning Dog in Hebrew) and his young master. Ms. Roth is able to bring to the screen that fine line between reality and brutality which will allow her audience to experience those times without the visual exposure of shared acts which should not be viewed. Join our star, Kaleb the dog, and his family in what will become a chronicled visual portrayal of the anti-Sematic realities of the 1930s. You will also become a participant in the shared experiences of those that survived and those whose lives they experienced along the way. While there can be no happy ending to a story of unspeakable acts of violence, there is a story of strength, hope and the ultimate demonstration of man's ability to survive. This is a story worth viewing and a story worthy of being shared. Rating: H - S - I - H - L = History Shared Is History Learned

This movie was unique. Different than anything I've seen. Especially about this subject matter. It has many levels--aspects that young people will like and complex ideas for adults. And these have to be the best dog actors I've ever seen! This is well worth your time.
