Solid sequel to The Shining by rising-star horror director Mike Flanagan; follows the further adventures of Danny Torrance...Now a 40-something recovering alcoholic; who works as an orderly at a hospice in Frazier, New Hampshire, and helps patients there cross to the other side, (hence the title, "Doctor Sleep"). In his work, Torrance unexpectedly crosses paths with another person with the Shining; young 10 year old girl Abra Stone; also a New Hampshire resident: who warns Danny about the True Knot; a group of psychic vampires who feed on children with The Shining. Together Abra and Danny decide to take on The True Knot and it's formidable leader; a demonic psychic called Rose the Hat. Roger Ebert said of Psycho 2, "It continues the story, but not the spell"... And the same can be said here. It's not an epic masterpiece for the ages like the original; it's just GOOD. But then, what's wrong with good? Flanagan anchors the procedural type story with his prototypically solid competence; following Stephen King's typically brilliant blue print for a story: and it's all sparked by three excellent performances by the leads ...Particularly Rebecca Ferguson; who makes a very formidable and creepy villainess. If this isn't the epic masterwork that the original was, it certainly makes a great companion piece. Overall: Thumbs up! 👍 Recommended

Terribly boring. I can't believe it has such high rating.

The shining is my favorite movie of all time, and the thought of a sequel many years later scared me. I was blown away though by how great this film really was! Mike Flanagan directs this movie so well. He's able to make you feel uneasy, and in some scenes, very uncomfortable. Ewan McGregor is amazing as Danny Torrance, giving so much depth and emotion to the character. Rebecca Ferguson is also great as Rose the hat. The film doesn't rely on the the shining, it doesn't make references non stop, it stands on its own two feet and that's very impressive to pull off.

A movie that finds the perfect balance between Kubricks film and Kings books. Loved it!

The closest spectacle to both action and horror I've ever seen. Mystery, magic, monsters, mania, mindful high spirited and or tear invoking times, imagination brought to life, all while upholding a strong standard of chilling and thrilling story telling, as well as character gimmicks that work better than brand jingles at sticking in your memory. The best part of this movie is that there are clearly defined rules to the shining, making it seems extremely realistic and sensible when imagined in reality. Yet still when crazy things happen and new abilities are revealed, they make sense and stay within the bounds of making the antagonists still seem like a genuine threat. Absolutely adore that there is major loss both for the protagonists and antagonists, allowing a feeling of real goosebumps as if some of the essential cast can die, anything can happen. 10/10 do recommend. The only reason I left of half a star is simply because the story has so much more to give and I feel isn't truly complete without more movies and stories based in this wonderful world

It was good, indeed. If you watch this thinking you'll see a plot that's intertwined with "The Shining" well, you won't be totally disappointed but this stands a little far from it, despite there were some references (that I appreciated). Overall, it was a good horror movie.

It's like if the Shining was part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
